Despite Not Playing, Joel Dreessen Still Watched The Super Bowl

DENVER (CBS4) – Despite not being in the game, Denver Broncos tight end Joel Dreessen definitely watched the Super Bowl. He said watching football is one of his favorite things to do when he’s not playing in a game. “I kind of watch it, get into it, kind of put yourself in the scenarios that those players are facing,” Dreessen said on Xfinity Monday Live! “Maybe it helps prepare you a little bit for that day when you are playing in it.” Dreessen wasn’t as forthcoming when asked if he was rooting for the Baltimore Ravens, who beat the Broncos to make it into the Super Bowl and eventually win. “Coach (John) Fox said it all season long — the most important thing is that we’re playing our best football going in to the playoffs. Obviously the Ravens did that and it was meant to be for them,” he said. Dreessen said the shock and disappointment of losing to the Ravens is still lingering with him. “Just because the body of work it took to get up to that moment. You go through all the OTAs (Organized Team Activities), all of training camp, the regular season — you stay healthy during it — and now it matters the most,” he said. “You have to play your best, and for us to get outlasted by another team in our home stadium, that’s going to bother me for a while; a long time.” During Super Bowl week Dreessen sent out a tweet saying, “Watching this SB media day is painful. We had the Ravens beat. Frustrating.” “I think it was kind of watching the whole two weeks of coverage,” he said. Dreessen had a career year. He had a career high in catches with 41 and he had five touchdowns. Combined, Dreessen and Jacob Tamme nearly caught 100 passes from the tight end position. “I guess you could just combine our stats and one of us would have went to the Pro Bowl,” Dreessen joked. A lot of people see Dreessen as a blocking tight end who only occasionally catches a pass, but Dreessen said he likes to think of himself as of complete a tight end as there comes. “As far as being able to hold up on the line of scrimmage as well as run the routes and catch the football,” he said. The good news is that Peyton Manning will be back and Dreessen expects the offense to be even better after Manning got his first year with the team under his belt. – By Matthew J.
