Health, Depth Both Key To Broncos’ Success

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) – On almost a daily basis, John Fox needs about as little time to roll through the Broncos injury report as it takes cornerback  Chris Harris  to return an interception 98 yards for a touchdown. In a league where injuries can make or break a team’s season, it’s Denver’s lack of them, along with its ability to replace the few players who do go out, that has turned the Broncos into legitimate Super Bowl contenders with a nine-game winning streak. Led by starting-caliber performances from Harris and running back  Knowshon Moreno , Denver (11-3) heads into the final stretch of the season looking pretty much the way the front office envisioned the roster on opening day. “All in all, I’d say our personnel department’s done an outstanding job,” Fox said. “You try to pick your best 53 and have confidence that all of them can play when called upon.” Moreno ran for 118 yards on 22 carries against the Ravens last Sunday. He has rushed for 391 yards since filling in for one of Denver’s few injured stars,  Willis McGahee , who went down with a knee injury on Nov. 18. On the other side of the ball, Harris had the longest interception return for a touchdown in Denver’s regular-season history on Sunday. His 98-yard return down the sideline was his second score this year. Both have come since he replaced  Tracy Porter  at cornerback opposite  Champ Bailey . “He’s a tough cover guy in practice, whether he’s going against (Brandon) Stokley, (Eric) Decker, or (Demaryius) Thomas, it’s been that way all season,” said  Peyton Manning , whose own health, top on Denver’s list of preseason concerns, has held up so far this year. “With our secondary, there have been some good challenges.” Moreno was a first-round draft pick who lost his job and was working on the scout team as recently as four weeks ago. Harris was an undrafted free agent from Kansas. Mix in 10-year veteran  Dan Koppen  at center and 15-year veteran  Keith Brooking  at linebacker and the picture is clear: By staying patient with the players they have and keeping a sharp eye on who’s available in the free agent market, the Broncos haven’t gone backward on the few occasions when they’ve lost starters. “There’s never a week you can let up, never a day you can ease up,” said the team’s leading tackler,  Wesley Woodyard , whose linebacker position has endured the most flux this year, with an injury to  Joe Mays  and the nine-game suspension of  D.J. Williams . Woodyard said having depth isn’t only a help when players go down. “You’ve always got to be at your best because the guy behind you is just as good as you, and everyone wants to be in there,” he said. “They can make plays, too. You’ve got to be focused and be on your game every week.” Nobody personified that idea better than Moreno. The fourth-year veteran was relegated to the scout team, set back by the lingering effects of a knee injury and a lost fumble during Week 2, which sent him to the bottom of the depth chart. Only when McGahee got injured did Moreno get another chance. Growing more confident with each week he’s in the lineup, Moreno is finding and moving toward the holes more quickly. Last week, he had his second straight 100-yard game, the highlight of which came when he hurdled Ravens safety  Ed Reed . “Just being prepared and working,” Moreno said when asked how he handled the eight straight weeks he was inactive on game day. “Just basically playing my role. Also, if I wasn’t going to play on Sundays, I was going to give it my all in practice. It was just having faith that maybe down the road I’d get my chance again.” Harris was also just a guy looking for a chance. A starter for most of his four years at Kansas, he spent three long days during the draft and his phone never rang. Only when the draft was over did he get a call from the Broncos, asking him to come to camp as a free agent. He was a long shot to make the roster, but quickly showed he can play. He has also shown a knack for the ball: Harris’ 98-yard pick and return against Joe Flacco adds to a 46-yard interception return for a score Oct. 15 against San Diego. Harris has cemented himself in the starting job that initially belonged to Porter, who hasn’t been active since Oct. 7, shortly before doctors began trying to regulate the medicine he uses to control seizures. Porter returned to practice Nov. 22. Along with 2011 free agent pickup  Tony Carter  and another savvy free agent signing – eighth-year safety  Jim Leonhard  was available in August – the defensive backfield has options if anyone beyond Porter goes out. “You see a guy practice and they practice great and that’s why they’re still on the team,” Bailey said. “But when it’s time to go out there and do it, some guys don’t do what they did in practice. These guys do. They’re doing exactly what I’ve seen since they got here. I’m just glad that now that they’ve gotten the opportunity to play, they’re taking advantage of it.” Notes: The Broncos had to practice indoors for the first time this season because of a snowstorm that rolled through town Wednesday morning. … Denver signed OL Lonnie Edwards to the practice squad to replace Quentin Saulsberry, who was suspended for four games after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. … Moreno was listed on the injury report (ribs) but practiced fully. Trainers were checking on him on the sideline in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game. – By Eddie Pells, AP National Writer (© Copyright 2012 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. Tom Brady, Robert Griffin headline Week 16′s initial practice participation reports (Shutdown Corner)

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady did not participate in Wednesday’s practice due to a right shoulder injury. Brady is coming off a game where he set a career-high with 65 pass attempts and his appearance on the injury report could be more of an issue of rest than anything else. Eighteen Patriots were “limited”, with the usual suspects highlighting the list. Wide receivers Brandon Lloyd (knee) and Wes Welker (ankle), tight ends Rob Gronkowski (forearm/hip) and Aaron Hernandez (ankle), starting offensive linemen Logan Mankins (ankle/calf), Dan Connolly (back), Sebastian Vollmer (back/knee) and Nate Solder (abdomen), defensive end Chandler Jones (ankle), linebackers Dont’a Hightower (hamstring/shoulder), Jerod Mayo (elbow) and Brandon Spikes (knee/ankle), cornerbacks Alfonzo Dennard (hamstring/knee) and Aqib Talib (hip) and safety Patrick Chung (shoulder). Of that group, most, if not all, are expected to be available for Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, who had six players absent on Wednesday, including running back Maurice Jones-Drew, who had hoped to return on Sunday, despite missing the last eight weeks of what is a 2-12 season for the Jaguars with a foot injury. The Jaguars were also without running back Rashad Jennings (concussion), center Brad Meester (foot) and middle linebacker Paul Posluszny (groin), while defensive tackle Tyson Alualu (calf) and cornerbacks Derek Cox (hamstring), Rashean Mathis (groin) and Aaron Ross (calf) were “limited”. Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin (knee) practiced fully on Wednesday and will likely start against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. The Redskins were without linebacker London Fletcher (ankle) and right tackle Tyler Polumbus (head) was limited during Wednesday’s practice. The Eagles announced that running back LeSean McCoy was cleared to play and will start against the Redskins. Wide receiver Jeremy Maclin (back) was limited. Guard T.J. Lang (concussion), wide receiver Jordy Nelson (hamstring) and center Jeff Saturday (neck/shoulder) were among nine Green Bay Packers not practicing on Wednesday. Lang could play against the Tennessee Titans, but that will not be determined until later in the week. Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb (shoulder) and safety Charles Woodson (collarbone) were limited on Wednesday. Woodson has yet to be cleared to return to full duty. Four Titans were out on Wednesday, including center Kevin Matthews, who has an ankle injury, and first round wide receiver Kendall Wright, who has a rib injury. Neither player is expected to play against the Packers. Six members of the Seattle Seahawks did not participate in Wednesday’s practice, including wide receiver Sidney Rice (knee), cornerbacks Walter Thurmond (hamstring) and Marcus Trufant (hamstring) and defensive tackles Alan Branch (ankle) and Jason Jones (knee). Running back Marshawn Lynch was limited with a back injury. Seattle’s opponent this week, the San Francisco 49ers, practiced without defensive tackle Justin Smith, who injured his left elbow in Sunday night’s 41-34 win over the New England Patriots. The 49ers led by 21 points before Smith’s injury, a lead they’d cough away in the fourth quarter. 49ers linebacker Clark Haggans (shoulder) did not practice, while linebacker Ahmad Brooks (shoulder), cornerback Tarell Brown (shoulder), linebacker Tavares Gooden (ribs), receiver Mario Manningham (shoulder), running back Bruce Miller (shoulder), linebacker Aldon Smith (shoulder) and defensive tackle Will Tukuafu (concussion) were limited.

Tim Tebow ‘disappointed’ in being passed over for Jets’ starting quarterback job (Shutdown Corner)

On Tuesday, New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan made the decision to bench quarterback Mark Sanchez and name 2011 seventh round pick Greg McElroy the starter. Needless to say, Tim Tebow was disappointed that he wasn’t elevated to the top of the depth chart. “Obviously, I’m a little disappointed,” Tebow said. ”You try to handle it the best you can.” Acquired from the Denver Broncos in exchange for fourth- and sixth-round picks in the 2012 NFL Draft and the agreement that the Jets would repay the Broncos $2.53 million of a salary advance Tebow had received in 2011, Tebow has played in nearly snaps on special teams (59) as he has on offense (71), according to playing-time data tracked by Shutdown Corner. ”I think we had a vision of using Tim in different ways,” head Rex Ryan said on Monday. ”Obviously, we used him as a personal punt protector. I thought maybe we would use him in other ways or something.”

Stealing Points, Week 16: Remember the Pack, forget the Titans (Roto Arcade)

If you’re still reading our 2012 fantasy football content, good for you. This means you’re still playing games of consequence this season, and that’s a good thing. (Or it means we’re locked into some co-dependent relationship that’s oddly functional. Okay, we can live with that, too.) You want to fight for every last point in any fantasy game, and it’s common for some sharp fantasy owners to play the one-week rental game with respect to defenses and kickers. These two positions always have good options floating around the waiver wire, in part because their week-to-week value is largely matchup-dependent. With that in mind, here is my 1.0 version of rankings at the rental spots in Week 16. Disagree with what’s here? You should, at least on some level. Disagreement is why we have a game in the first place. And given how well you’ve done to this point in the year, maybe you don’t need any outside help. But if you’re looking for a way to break a tie between options, allow me to flip the coin for you. General defense and kicker methodology : Whenever possible, ride with someone tied to a team that’s likely to win (the more lopsided, the better). Game flow is essential for these positions. Sure, sometimes the process seems good but the outcome is a Shark Sandwich (waving at you, Week 15 Lions), but over the long run this is a proven way to go about it . Seriously, it works. Make the jump and the ranks will follow. I’ll be tweaking this list as the week goes along, on the Yahoo! site and on Fantasy Pros as well.
