Week 15 Sunday Picks: Falcons out to show they’re legitimate Super Bowl contenders (Shutdown Corner)

New York Giants at Atlanta Falcons The Falcons are in the midst of the most successful period in the organization’s history, but have yet to win the playoff game necessary to validate the Mike Smith/Thomas Dimitroff Era. The Giants have won the last four meetings between the two franchises, including a 24-2 win in last year’s Wild Card Playoffs. If the Falcons want to be taken seriously in January, they need to beat a team like the Giants in December. Pick : Falcons 23, Giants 21 Denver Broncos at Baltimore Ravens If you believe in things like karma, or the “football gods”, you’ve probably noticed that the Ravens haven’t looked like “The Ravens” since running a fake field goal when they were up 24 points late in the third quarter of a 55-20 win over the Oakland Raiders. Back-to-back losses has kept the AFC North up for grabs and the Ravens’  final three games on the schedule are against teams fighting for either playoff positioning (Denver) or spots in the post-season (NY Giants, Cincinnati). The Broncos are red-hot, winning eight straight, but have lost to the Falcons, Texans and Patriots, so they’re still seeking that signature win over a playoff-caliber team. Beating the Ravens would add that to their resume Pick : Broncos 28, Ravens 20 Green Bay Packers at Chicago Bears The Packers have won four straight and seven of their last nine games in this classic rivalry that will reach a 184th game this Sunday in Soldier Field. The Packers have overcome injuries to their offensive line, and key players such as Greg Jennings, Clay Matthews and Charles Woodson to overtake the Bears and have a chance to clinch the NFC North on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Bears are banged up, with Jay Cutler reportedly battling a sprained MCL in addition to a neck injury. With four losses in their last five games, the Bears have shown that they’re not as resilient or as deep as the Packers. Pick : Packers 30, Bears 24

Baltimore Ravens A Tough, Physical Test For Denver Broncos

By Rich Kurtzman No matter how you slice it, this week’s game will be difficult for Denver. Yes, the Broncos are riding an NFL-high eight-game winning streak by playing well in all three phases of the game, and they’ll have to bring that all-around production to Baltimore this Sunday. That’s because the Ravens are a team always on the attack, on both sides of the football. (Credit, Larry French/Getty Images) Joe Flacco has continually improved throughout his career, and is arguably playing the best football as a professional this season. He’s confident, believing he deserves to be considered one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, though his numbers don’t yet reflect that status. Flacco’s thrown for 3,220 yards and 18 touchdowns compared to nine interceptions with six fumbles, far too many turnovers to be among the top tier. When he can protect the ball though, Baltimore’s offense thrives. He has two talented receivers to toss the ball to in veteran Anquan Boldin and speed freak Torrey Smith. Boldin is a physical receiver, using his size to gain positioning, and he leads the Ravens with 58 catches for 828 yards with four scores. Smith is more the deep threat, with 43 receptions for 753 yards and seven touchdowns, while tight end Dennis Pitta is the possession receiver over the middle. Of course, the Ravens only ask Flacco to throw to bring balance to their offense, because runner Ray Rice is the real deal. Rice runs with fervor, he’s ferocious and won’t go down without a fight, which is amazing considering his smallish stature (5’8” 220 pounds). The fifth-year star averages a fantastic five yards per carry, and he’s improved that to a stellar 6.2 yards per rush during the crunch time of December. And just to make himself even more difficult to defend, Rice catches passes out of the backfield as well, making him a threat to go the distance from nearly anywhere on the football field. Where Baltimore strikes the most fear into opposing teams is on defense. All-time great Ray Lewis (triceps surgery) is eligible to play this week, which would bring a big-time boost to Baltimore’s defense, as it would if Terrell Suggs (biceps) can go as well. Both of them on the field again would be scary for Denver, especially if right guard Chris Kuper must sit again with the injured ankle that’s hampered his play for six weeks. Lewis and Suggs can do just about anything anyone could hope out of a linebacker; rushing the quarterback, dropping into coverage and coming up to hit hard in the run game. No matter which team you root for, they’re a fun, fearsome duo to watch. The Ravens don’t just have possible future Hall of Famers at linebacker either, but on the defensive line and secondary as well. Defensive tackle Haloti Ngata is probably the most dominant DT in the National Football League today. He’s a massive man, at 6’4” 335 pounds, who usually eats up two blockers and still finds ways to shed them to make tackles in the backfield. Ngata is fourth on the team with 4.0 sacks, and the massive man has even defended a pass. Safety Ed Reed knows all about defending the pass, enjoying another stellar season with four interceptions, 11 throws knocked away and he’s even scored once. Reed’s experienced, athletic and he hits extremely hard, making both he and Ngata key players Denver must prepare to go to battle against. And if that weren’t enough, the Ravens have a great return man in Jacoby Jones, who has one punt and two kickoff returns for a touchdown this season alone. When the Broncos line up to play in Baltimore this Sunday they’ll have everything going against them—it’s a road game, on the East Coast, with rain probable, in Baltimore where they are 0-5 all-time—making this contest a great measuring stick just before the playoffs begin. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. MT and the game can be seen on CBS. For more Local Football Bloggers and the latest Broncos news, see  CBS Sports Denver . Baltimore Ravens A Tough, Physical Test For Denver Broncos

On A Roll, Miller Heads To Lewis’ Turf

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) – Almost any time  Ray Lewis  has lined up over the last 17 years, he has been the best linebacker — if not the best player — on the field. If Lewis is in uniform Sunday when the Ravens play the Broncos that might not be the case. With his rare combination of around-the-corner speed and nimble footwork that helps him beat offensive tackles, then dance over fallen quarterbacks, Denver’s  Von Miller  is changing the equation. “I looked up to him when I was younger,” the 23-year-old Miller said of Lewis, the two-time defensive player of the year and a seven-time Associated Press All-Pro. “I look up to him now.” While Lewis has spent the better part of the season on injured reserve with a torn triceps, Miller is staking out Lewis’ old territory, as arguably the most disruptive linebacker in the game. He was last year’s defensive rookie of the year and is a favorite to be named this year’s defensive player of the year. He heads into the 14th game of the season with 16 sacks, one short of  Elvis Dumervil ‘s single-season franchise record. Miller has at least one sack in the past six games, along with six forced fumbles and a total of 24 tackles in opposing team’s backfields. In other words, he is a player opposing offenses must account for in their game plans, and if that sounds familiar in Baltimore, it should. Teams have been planning around Lewis for years. “They’re both extremely passionate, they both love to play, they both disrupt games. That’s about where the similarities end,” said Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, who also coached Lewis during his early years in Baltimore. “Both of them are extremely different in how they impact games. Ray was probably the best inside linebacker to ever play. … Von’s an amazing edge guy, a sack man, a guy who can disrupt. I’d like to have both of them, but I’m sure glad we have Von.” Among the story lines following Miller this week are the three fines he’s received from the NFL this year – for hits on quarterbacks  Matt Schaub  of the Texans,  Cam Newton  of the Panthers and  Josh Freeman  of the Buccaneers. Miller has appealed all the fines. He said the Schaub one has been upheld but that he hasn’t heard back on the other two. He said he isn’t trying to hurt anyone but won’t change the way he plays. “It really doesn’t bother me too much, because I know that’s not the type of player I am,” Miller said. “It’s just the type of circumstances that happened that put me in those positions.” Lewis is eligible to come off the injured reserve list this week, though Ravens coach John Harbaugh isn’t tipping his hand. Not knowing whether they’ll face him, a number of the Broncos said they have to be prepared for Lewis’ intensity if he is in uniform come Sunday. “I’ve always kind of kidded that Ray is just as intense and passionate in the fourth quarter of the fourth preseason game as he is in the first quarter of a playoff game,” said  Peyton Manning , who is 8-0 against Lewis and the Ravens, including playoffs, since 2002. “It’s real, and that’s pretty special and pretty unique.” Miller, who likes to speak of his “fanatical effort,” shows all signs that he can match Lewis’ intensity and, like Lewis, that he can do it with his own signature flair. Lewis’ trademark is “The Squirrel” – the frenetic dance he does when he comes out of the tunnel during pregame introductions. Miller prefers to do his dancing after he sacks the quarterback. The linebackers haven’t crossed paths often but when they do, Miller tries to take advantage. “I’ve had the opportunity, the blessing, just to be in his presence and talk to him and pick his mind a little bit, so that’s great,” Miller said. Miller’s second-year surge has been as big a boost for the Broncos on defense as Manning’s arrival has been for the offense. It’s a big reason the Broncos are 10-3, with the AFC West title already secured and a chance at a first-round bye in the playoffs. Denver has the fourth-ranked defense in yards allowed and has given up fewer points than anyone in the AFC. Denver has 39 sacks this season, tied for second in the NFL, and Miller’s presence accounts for more than just the 16 he’s recorded. “In my eyes, I think he’s been, all around, maybe the defensive player of the year,” Dumervil said. “He’s been really working at all phases of the game. He’s a big part of what we’ve got accomplished so far so it’s been great.” Notes : LB  Wesley Woodyard  (ankle) was limited in practice Thursday. Told of Woodyard’s statement that he would definitely play against the Ravens, Broncos coach John Fox said, “Sometimes we’re all legends in our own mind. We’ll be day-to-day and we’ll see how that goes.” … Manning needs 188 yards to hit 4,000 yards for the 12th time. … The Broncos lead the league by outscoring their opponents by 71 points in the fourth quarter. Chicago is next at plus-47. By EDDIE PELLS, AP National Writer (© Copyright 2012 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. Fines won’t deter Miller from job

ENGLEWOOD — Despite the shadow of a possible one-game suspension for another hit the NFL considers out of bounds, Broncos linebacker Von Miller said everyone knows he’s not a dirty player and he will keep trying to do his job the same way in the Broncos’ defense.
