Nalen: ‘There’s No Time For Tebow Time. Ever’

DENVER (CBS4) – While memories of Tim Tebow are beginning to erode from Broncos fans’ minds, the New York Jets are the ones in the thick of the Tebow debate this year. During the Game Talk segment of CBS4′s show Chevy Football Preview over the weekend former Broncos lineman Tom Nalen said despite the Jets woes so far this year, they shouldn’t consider benching their starting quarterback Mark Sanchez for the former Bronco. “No, it should never be Tebow time. He’s a terrible quarterback. He cannot throw the ball. He’s not very intelligent,” Nalen said. “He’s probably the 65th best quarterback in the NFL. Thirty two teams, times two — that’s 64. So, he’s a third string quarterback.” Former Broncos running back Reggie Rivers, also a featured guest on Game Talk, said he “doesn’t think Tebow will ever be successful as an NFL quarterback” but that the Jets might as well let him start. “The Jets saw what he did last year, they knew exactly what his strengths and weaknesses were. If you traded for him and actively brought him to your team and you didn’t cut him in training camp and now he’s on your roster and your starting quarterback is struggling … Why wouldn’t you put him on the field? Why would you go get him if you didn’t plan to put him on the field. So I think that, yes, it is Tebow time.” The Jets traded a fourth round and a sixth round pick to the Broncos in exchange for Tebow after Executive Vice President John Elway and the Broncos convinved Peyton Manning to sign with Denver. So far Tebow hasn’t seen much playing time for the Jets, and Nalen noted that he has been used a little bit on punt coverage. Still, he’s not completely anti-Tebow. “The only thing that would help them Jets is expanding the Tebow package, and that’s what I thought they should do,” Nalen said. “Give him more plays. Have the defense prepare for his offense more, as well as Sanchez, kind of split their reps up. “But to start Tim Tebow? Hell no.”

Bailey: Broncos Have Closed Gap With Patriots

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) – After giving up 86 points to the Patriots last year, the Denver Broncos realized just how far away they were from becoming a championship contender. Following the Broncos’ 45-10 loss at New England in the playoffs, coach John Fox pledged, “We will do everything we can to get better.” And they did. They swapped Tim Tebow for Peyton Manning , retooled the offense and fortified their defense. They’ll get to gauge just how much they’ve narrowed that gap Sunday when they visit Tom Brady and the Patriots. Champ Bailey insists the gulf hasn’t just been narrowed but closed entirely, suggesting the Broncos “know we can win” this time, something he’s not so sure they believed nine months ago. “I didn’t feel like there were 53 guys that thought we could win,” Bailey said. “And it showed.” He wouldn’t name names, instead saying the Broncos (2-2) are simply better equipped and better prepared to keep up with the Patriots (2-2) this time around. “Couple of different players here and there. Different coordinator. Different mentality,” Bailey said. “But I think last year, it was pretty obvious we didn’t put our best effort in that last game. It was real disappointing to get that far and not put forth 100 percent. But it is what it is, it’s in the past, and this is a different year, different breed of guys going in there.” With right guard Chris Kuper ready to return from a broken left forearm, middle linebacker Joe Mays back from a one-game suspension for an illegal hit, and second-year tight end Virgil Green ‘s month-long suspension for violating the league’s banned-substances policy over, the Broncos are as invigorated as they’ve been all season. They had perfect attendance at practice this week for the first time. And they have a healthy confidence, too, insisting they can keep up with the high-powered Patriots after losing to them 41-23 on Dec. 18, ending a six-game winning streak, and by five touchdowns in the divisional playoffs in January. “I think we have better personnel and we have a better scheme,” Mays said. “We just have to go out there and execute.” That’s something they didn’t do well last year, when Denver’s offense had eight three-and-outs, four four-and-outs and lost a fumble on the first play of another drive in two blowout losses to New England. Now, they have Manning running the show. “Oh, we can put up points,” running back Willis McGahee boasted. “There’s no doubt about it.” Asked about the firepower the Broncos bring to Foxborough this time around, McGahee borrowed a phrase from the New York Jets’ loquacious linebacker Bart Scott that punctuated a postgame rant following a playoff victory over New England a couple of years ago. “I like the firepower regardless of this year or last year, but yep, this year is a little bit better,” McGahee said. “Looking forward to it. Can’t wait. In Bart Scott words, `Can’t wait!’ “ With Tebow, the Broncos ran the read-option that proved no match for Brady’s precision passing game. “I think like last year we went into the game, run first, worry about the pass later,” McGahee said. “This year we can do both. So, the sky’s the limit. It’s not like we’re going to be cornered in one position, just run the ball, run the ball, you know? We’re going to be able to get some passes off, we’re going to be able to get some runs off.” Manning’s arrival alone made both the Broncos’ offense and defense better. With his ability to produce long drives, Denver’s defense hasn’t been as gassed as it was with the offense going three-and-out so often like it did under Tebow. That could make a big difference Sunday. “Ah, it’s going to be great,” Mays said. “What our offense brings is going to be great to keep us off the field a little bit, because while we’re out there, it’s going to be hard work. We’re going against one of the best quarterbacks in the game, and it’s going to be a tough one for us. I’m looking forward to going out there and having a much better outcome than we did two times last year.” Notes : Broncos FB Chris Gronkowski had no advice this week for his teammates who will be facing his brother, Patriots All-Pro TE Rob Gronkowski : “They’ve seen the film. They played him last year, so they should have a good idea. I don’t have to go against him, so I don’t really know.” By ARNIE STAPLETON, AP Pro Football Writer (© Copyright 2012 The Associated Press. Week 5 in the NFL: A Jets Fan’s View of the Competition (Yahoo! Contributor Network)

With Darrelle Revis and Santonio Holmes out for the year, the New York Jets’ path to a Super Bowl championship has the credibility of a heartwarming Lindsay Lohan story. Most teams, though, are still within reach of the Jets, so hope remains alive. There are a number of teams to consider that stand firmly in the way of a playoff berth, of course – too many to cover here. In the NFL’s 5th week, here’s a sampling of some compelling matchups:

Broncos Look To Get A Leg Up With A Healthy Roster; A Dozen Patriots Questionable Leading Into Superb Sunday Showdown

By Rich Kurtzman Looking at the injury report for Denver and New England, it would seem to be the tale of two teams, health-wise. (Photo by Rick Stewart/Getty Images) The Broncos are basically completely healthy—with all five players listed as probable—while the Patriots are banged up at multiple skill positions—with 12 listed as questionable. In Dove Valley this week, Chris Kuper not only made a comeback, he was a full participant Thursday and Friday. Kuper seems to be quite close to coming back from the broken forearm he’s been battling with since mid-August, and he could possibly play this week. He would bolster the Broncos’ offensive line, to be sure, especially after starting center J.D. Walton was lost last Sunday due to a broken ankle. Tracy Porter, who has a sore shoulder, should be able to start this week and likely lineup against speedy wideout Wes Welker. Welker’s enjoyed being Tom Brady’s top receiving threat again this season, and he leads the Pats in both receptions and yards. Attempting to help Porter slow down New England’s passing attack is nickelback Chris Harris, who rolled his ankle Week One against the Steelers. Slot receiver Julian Edelman has been ruled out, so that’s one less weapon for the Denver secondary to worry about, though both tight ends Rob Gronkowski (hip) and Aaron Hernandez (ankle) are questionable. Gronkowski, the most deadly tight end in the league, will play, but Hernandez’s status is up in the air. Gronk and Hernandez destroyed Denver last January, through the air and the ground, and missing one would be a big blow to the Pats. Others listed on Denver’s injury report are backups; linebacker Nate Irving and wide receiver Matt Willis. Both should be available to play. Every one of the Broncos’ hurt players were able to fully participate Friday, meaning they should have a full roster to play with for the first time all season. In all, the Patriots have 13 players listed—with defensive tackle Kyle Love the only one probable—and they have nearly every position accounted for on the injury report. Besides those previously mentioned, linebacker Dont’a Hightower (hamstring) and guard Logan Mankins (hip/ankle) would be the most significant losses to the team. Hightower is the rookie starter with 17 tackles, and arguably the team’s most athletic player on the defensive side of the ball. Mankins is the seasoned veteran and has been one of the top guards in the NFL for the last eight years. Of course, it must be mentioned that New Enland, led by the rebellious Bill Belichick, plays around with the injury list a bit. They mask the truly injured players by calling nearly everyone “questionable,” making it a guessing game as to which ones teams will need to focus on stopping. It means the Broncos will have to prepare for everyone, and they know how explosive the Patriots offense is. New England put up 52 points—40 in the second half—in their blowout of Buffalo last week, meaning they may have just hit their stride. Probable: Denver: Guard Chris Kuper (forearm) Linebacker Nate Irving (concussion) Wide Receiver Matt Willis (hamstring) Cornerback Tracy Porter (shoulder) Nickelback Chris Harris (ankle) New England: Defensive Tackle Kyle Love (knee) Questionable: New England: Linebacker Dont’a Hightower (hamstring) Guard Logan Mankins (ankle/hip) Tight End Rob Gronkowski (hip) Tight End Aaron Hernandez (ankle) Running Back Brandon Bolden (knee) Defensive End Brandon Deaderick (ankle) Defensive Tackle Justin Francis (ankle) Tight End Michale Hoomanawanui (concussion) Offensive Lineman Nick McDonald (shoulder) Cornerback Sterling Moore (knee) Running Back Shane Vereen (foot) Offensive Tackle Sebastian Vollmer (back) More Local CBS Football Bloggers content here. 2012 Eagles Try to Save Reid like 2005 Steelers Saved Cowher: A Fan’s Analysis (Yahoo! Contributor Network)

The Philadelphia Eagles have waited over a decade to finally win the Super Bowl with Andy Reid. As such, Eagles fans like myself regard this year as his last chance, or at least one of his last chances. Basically, we want Philadelphia to finally put Reid over the hump this year, like the Pittsburgh Steelers did for Bill Cowher in 2005.
