The NFL is certainly full of surprises and excitement as Week 4 proved. Kudos goes out to the Atlanta Falcons, Arizona Cardinals, and Houston Texans for remaining undefeated through the first quarter of the season. On the flip side, the Cleveland Browns and New Orleans Saints are still looking for their first win.

Manning Finds A Groove Even With A New Center

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) – Peyton Manning got his groove back even with a backup center snapping him the ball. Just in time for another showdown with Tom Brady , too. Dogged by interceptions one week and incompletions the next, Manning was simply incredible Sunday in leading the Denver Broncos to their biggest blowout of the Oakland Raiders in nearly a half-century. Manning looked as comfortable as he’s been in blue and orange yet. He had his first sackless game in Denver and his 65th 300-yard passing performance of his career, which extended the NFL record he set a week earlier. He didn’t miss a beat – and only three throws – after center J.D. Walton broke his left ankle just before halftime and was replaced by recently signed veteran Dan Koppen . “The key that I’ve said all along is just trying to keep making progress somehow,” Manning said. “That doesn’t always show on the scoreboard – you’d like to win every game as you’re feeling your way and learning about your team and learning about yourself a little bit. “So, there’s still a lot of that going on, for me out there as the quarterback, and for our team, sort of figuring things out.” Manning had plenty of help in finding a comfort zone Sunday. “It’s like anything: the more you do it, the better you get,” coach John Fox said. “And I’ve seen steady improvement, in not just him but in how he operates with all his teammates. When we talk about passing the football, there’s a lot of moving parts … and they all go hand in hand. You can spring leaks in a lot of different areas.” Or, as was the case against the Raiders, in none at all. With a better pocket of protection, Manning picked and poked his way downfield on seven scoring drives as he enjoyed his biggest margin of victory since leading Indianapolis to a 42-6 romp against the St. Louis Rams on Oct. 25, 2009. Manning was upright most of the afternoon after getting sacked eight times through three weeks – the most in his NFL career. In 38 drop-backs, he was hit just twice and knocked down one time, by cornerback Phillip Adams on a third-quarter blitz. He was tapped two other times after releasing the ball and he initiated contact himself one time when he blocked a defensive back after handing off for an end-around. Other than that, the most Manning got touched was during the postgame hugs and handshakes. It may have looked easy, but Manning had to make a major adjustment just before halftime when Raiders defensive end Jack Crawford crashed into Walton’s legs from behind as he was making the tackle on running back Lance Ball . In came Koppen, who spent his first nine seasons in New England but missed most of last year with an injury similar to Walton’s. He signed with Denver three weeks ago after the Patriots cut him. “We felt really good about the addition because he brings top-notch experience at that position,” Fox said. Koppen has now snapped for the two greatest quarterbacks of his generation and on Sunday he’ll be on the other side of the showdown. “I’m sure it’s going to be fun,” Koppen said. “A little bit different view, but it’s still just football.” After falling behind by 20 points in each of his previous two games, Manning was understandably excited about his best performance yet as a Bronco. Yet, he kept things in perspective. One fine afternoon wasn’t about to make him think everything was great. “We still have some things to improve on, but any time you can be working on things and get a win at the same time, that sure is nice,” Manning said. Next week the Broncos travel to Gillette Stadium for the 12th installment of Manning-Brady. Manning has won four of the last six matchups but Brady has won seven times overall. Manning is in Denver because of the Broncos’ 45-10 drubbing at the hands of the Patriots in the playoffs, which led Fox and John Elway to overhaul the roster, starting with Manning on offense and Jack Del Rio, Tracy Porter and Mike Adams on defense. They feel they’re better prepared now to keep up with the league’s aerial fireworks show. “But time will tell,” Fox said. “It’s going to be a very tough game at their place. … They’ve got a lot of firepower and they’ve got a first-ballot Hall of Famer under center, as well.” The Broncos put Walton on injured reserve Monday, when linebacker Joe Mays returned from his one-game suspension for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Houston quarterback Matt Schaub . Notes : The Broncos have a roster exemption for TE Virgil Green , who returned Monday from a four-game suspension. Still out for at least two more games is LB D.J. Williams , who is serving a drug suspension and recently met with commissioner Roger Goodell, who could punish him further over his recent conviction for driving while ability impaired. RB Knowshon Moreno pleaded guilty last week to a similar charge in a separate incident. “Both cases are under review,” league spokesman Greg Aiello told The Associated Press. Eagles’ Best of the Rest in Week 4 NFL Power Rankings: A Fan’s Analysis (Yahoo! Contributor Network)

The Philadelphia Eagles took a hit in the NFL power rankings going into Week 4. But if they lost to the New York Giants on Sept. 30, Eagles fans like myself would freak out over more than rankings. However, Philadelphia survived New York by mere inches and got to keep their place in the NFL top 10 for now – though there wasn’t much room to move up.

Mays: Suspension Won’t Change My Style

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) – Getting suspended a game and fined $50,000 for his hit on Houston quarterback Matt Schaub isn’t going to make Denver Broncos middle linebacker Joe Mays change his style. “I’m going to keep playing the way I’ve been playing, the way that I was taught to play the game,” Mays said Monday after he was reinstated. “I’m not going to hold back at all. I may try to be safe a little bit, I guess. But as far as me holding back the way I play, no. Hard to the whistle.” Mays, whose hit sent Schaub’s helmet and a chunk of his left ear flying, was also fined $50,000 but got to keep his $200,000-plus game check from Sunday. “I was definitely happy about that,” said Mays, who watched the Broncos’ 37-6 win over Oakland at home with his family. “You don’t want to get a game check taken away from you, but at the same time, I still wanted to play, being the competitor that I am, and it (stunk) being at home watching it. But I’m just glad these guys took care of business.” Mays immediately apologized to Schaub for the nasty hit during the Broncos’ 31-25 loss to the Texans at Denver on Sept. 23. Mays said he didn’t intend to hurt Schaub and the quarterback accepted his apologies. Mays said he appreciated the words of support last week from his coach, John Fox, and his teammates, who said Mays wasn’t a dirty player but a hard-hitting, speedy linebacker who got caught in no man’s land when Schaub ducked his head after releasing a pass with Mays bearing down on him. Mays said he can’t bring himself to pull back but will do everything he can to avoid an illegal hit and the accompanying punishment from the league. “That’s how I approach the game; that’s how I’m going to continue to approach the game,” Mays said. “I’ll just try to make sure that I stay out of these situations that I just put myself in.” Mays returned to the Broncos on Monday along with second-year tight end Virgil Green , who had been suspended four games for violating the league’s banned-substances policy. Green said he took prescribed medication that contained a banned ingredient that he wasn’t aware of. Green was walking around with a big smile after having to stay away from the team for the first month of the season. “I woke up this morning, I couldn’t even stay in bed,” he said. “I just got up, started listening to music, getting my day going, getting back to my old ways. Today was much like Christmas Day, coming in and opening some gifts. Got a nice little pen ready to use. I’m excited.” Notes : The Broncos released linebacker Mike Mohamed , whom they had promoted from their practice squad Saturday. NFL power rankings: The Vikings continue their march toward the top 10 (Shutdown Corner)

Are they for real? We’re getting to the portion of the season where that’s the most pressing question in the NFL. Unexpected teams have unexpected records. The Cardinals, Bengals and Vikings are a combined 10-2. Which of them are real? Which are going to fold like origami swans? And which of the unexpectedly bad teams are really that bad? The Saints, Steelers and Lions are a combined 2-9. Which of those teams will pull themselves out of the muck, and which will keep wallowing in it like drunken swine? The power rankings hold the answers. 1. Atlanta Falcons (4-0) Last week: 3 The Panthers came at the Falcons with their best punch on Sunday. That wasn’t the same Panthers team that did everything for the Giants but give them neck massages last Thursday night. They fought like they needed that one, and still the Falcons were better. Checking in with Matt Ryan’s MVP campain, he added 369 yards and three touchdowns to his resume. His QB rating is best in the league, he’s second in touchdown passes, sixth in yards and second in completion percentage. 2.Houston Texans (4-0) Last week: 2 The 11th week of the season is the earliest anyone has ever clinched a division title. It’s time to start keeping an eye on that record. If you’re not yet a believer in the Texans, you’re about to get a double dose of them in primetime: this coming week on Monday night against the Jets, and the next week on Sunday night against Green Bay. 3. Arizona Cardinals (4-0) Last week: 1 I have to throw some respect Kevin Kolb’s way. I wasn’t tremendously nice to him last week , but he did hit the Dolphins with 324 yards and three touchdowns this week (two interceptions, too, but they only get a parenthetical because this is supposed to be something nice). Maybe more importantly, he captained a tremendous last-minute touchdown drive and forced overtime with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Andre Roberts that kept the dream of 16-0 alive. I almost typed that with a straight face.
