Jack Del Rio Calls Broncos’ Defensive Coordinator Turnaround ‘Unusual’

DENVER (CBS4) – Coaching turnover happens in every sport, especially in the NFL. But there’s something to be said for cohesion as head coaches probably would like their staff to be intact for a few years. That hasn’t been the case for the Denver Broncos as Jack Del Rio has become the seventh defensive coordinator in seven years. “It’s unusual, what’s occurred here,” Del Rio said. “It probably is a record of sorts and for me I know it like a part of the history of what’s gone on here. But I’m focused on jumping in and helping this team win now.” Del Rio and former wide receiver Ed McCaffrey were the special guests on Xfinity Monday Live! McCaffrey talked about being a player when there’s high turnover with the coaching staff. “It’s always tough if the entire defensive scheme changes, but in this case I think you’ve got a guy who knows the defensive scheme, he knows Coach Fox; these guys have worked together,” McCaffrey said. “They’re going to come in and pick up right where they left off … I’m expecting big things out of the defense.” Del Rio explained why he decided to the take the job in Denver. “The opportunity to take a team that last year defensively was 24th, so there’s a lot of room for growth there. So we want to build on the things they did well,” Del Rio said. “Certainly having a guy like Von Miller, Elvis Dumervil, Champ Bailey; those are star players in the league. Having a chance to work with them is terrific.” He said they need to concentrate more on how they’re going to stuff the run and not allow explosive plays and cut down on the mental errors. “We want to be Top 5 in everything that we do, and so that’s what we’ve set our goals for,” he said. “We’ve got a ways to go.” Del Rio had some of the best defensive lines when he coached in Jacksonville, and he said he’s not at all worried about the Broncos’ defensive line. “I’m not worried about it, I’m working it; and that’s what we have to do,” he said. “We’ve got to work to fix whatever problems we have. Obviously last year the defensive tackle position here went the entire year without a sack. That’s going to change.” He said having Ty Warren healthy and drafting Derek Wolfe is going to help the cause. – By Matthew J.
