The AFL turns 50 this week. The first game of the American Football League — the one that helped usher in the modern NFL — was Sept. 9, 1960. That’s 50 years ago Thursday. The game between the Boston Patriots and Denver Broncos took place at Boston University Field in front of 21,597 fans. Gino Cappelletti had the league’s first points — a 34-yard field goal in the first quarter.

Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said today that rookie wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, the club’s top draft pick in April, could make his NFL debut in Sunday’s opener at Jacksonville.
The Denver Broncos announced their team captains for the season in balloting conducted by the players.
