The AFL turns 50 this week. The first game of the American Football League — the one that helped usher in the modern NFL — was Sept. 9, 1960. That’s 50 years ago Thursday. The game between the Boston Patriots and Denver Broncos took place at Boston University Field in front of 21,597 fans. Gino Cappelletti had the league’s first points — a 34-yard field goal in the first quarter.

Broncos hopeful WR Thomas will play Sunday
