BRONCOS-CARDINALS 2nd Half blog.

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Let’s take a quick look at the first half box score:

- Kurt Warner was 4-for-4 for 48 yards. No scores, and his longest pass was 25 yards. Matt Leinart was 10-of-14 for 177 yards and a touchdown. There were times Leinart looked great (see: 90-yard touchdown drive) and times the offense just looked shaky when he was running it (see: fumbled backwards pass).

- Broncos rookie RB Anthony Alridge had 12 carries for 79 yards, an average of 6.6 yards per carry. If I were a betting woman, I’d put my money on him making the 53-man roster.

- Darrell Hackney has almost as many yards rushing (40) as he does passing (57). His longest pass so far is 10 yards. The debate for the Broncos is whether to put Hackney on the practice squad or give him a roster spot as the third quarterback.

- Good news for the defense: Two forced fumbled, both recovered by Denver. The bad? Neither of the second-string corners were sharp (see: Leinart’s passing stats).

- The trend continues in the third quarter: Another forced fumble (by Wesley Woodyard … sign him up?) recovered by Hamza Abdullah.

Broncos on bubble get last chance to prove they belong

The Broncos, like every other team in the league, have to get their rosters to 53 players by Saturday afternoon. Friday night’s game against the Cardinals was the last chance for plenty of players in uniform for the game, including third-string quarterback Darrell Hackney, above, to make any kind of impression.

BRONCOS-CARDINALS 1st HALF LIVE BLOG

GLENDALE, Ariz. — It’s been a good start for a couple of the guys firmly on the bubble: LBs Wesley Woodyard and Louis Green, RB Anthony Alridge and P Sam Paulescu.

Out of LBs Jordan Beck, Woodyard and Green, the Broncos will likely only be able to keep two. So far tonight, Woodyard and Green have each tackled Arizona starting QB Kurt Warner. Green’s was counted as a 5-yard sack.

Anthony Alridge, the undrafted rookie from the University of Houston, wasn’t able to play last week with a sore hamstring. He’s already broken a couple of long runs, including a 17-yarder on his second touch.

Paulescu, who didn’t punt last week against Green Bay, gave the Broncos excellent field position with a 48-yard punt. It barely glanced the sideline at the 7-yard line. A centimeter to the left, and it would have been ruled down at the 1-yard line. This battle between Paulescu and Brett Kern might be the most interesting thing to watch tonight.

2ND QUARTER UPDATES

- Arizona is one of only two teams that as of Friday evening had not named a starting quarterback. Kurt Warner got the nod tonight over Matt Leinart and seemed to have the edge. Looks like the battle is far from over. Leinart just engineered a 90-yard touchdown drive.

- Good cornerbacks pride themselves on having short memories. Let’s home Domonique Foxworth can forget the last two plays of the Cardinals’ scoring drive: a 35-yard catch by Jerheme Urban, then Leonard Pope’s touchdown. Foxworth got beat — badly — on both.

- Pretty impressive touchdown drive by the Broncos, featuring a couple of nice runs by Alridge. He did take a pretty hard hit though, on a short gain, and quickly limped off the field. Trainers raced to re-tape his left ankle, but by the time they were done, Michael Pittman had scored.

- Rookie LB Spencer Larsen made a pretty nice tackle during the ensuing kickoff return, then did a little dance. Can’t blame him for being excited. He grew up in the Phoenix area, went to U of A and his family — including his wife and two sons — live here. (Larsen is one of three Bronco rookies who played college football in the state. Ryan Torain and Josh Barrett both went to Arizona State.)

- You’ve got to love when coaches use their red challenge flags during preseason games, like Ken Whisenhut just did on a rule non-catch by Early Doucet. I mean, REALLY? In preseason? Not necessary.

- Louis Green has left the game with a finger injury. What is it with Bronco defenders and their digits? Tough break for Green, though. You’ll remember he was the player taken off the field on a backboard in the preseason opener.
